Field Trip #33: African Art

The National Museum of African Art is located behind the Castle on the National Mall. It is underground and easy to miss but if you are planning a unit of study related to African culture you won't want to miss this place!

Not only can you take a group of students here to study African Art in-depth but you can also take part in hands on activities like in the workshop that is right next to the new exhibit on basket weaving. Students can learn about different basket weaving techniques as well as try their hands at weaving. There are also African proverbs that you can connect to different weaving styles and an opportunity for students to create their own styles of baskets.

There are also pretty cool activities like this one copied from the website:
Deadline extended! Applications due July 20.
2010 Teen Media Literacy Workshop call for applications
This newly created, weeklong workshop introduces students to the process of analyzing and discussing media images of Africa through films.

What a great way to learn about different aspects of how people view life in Africa! Again this is a more general approach to "traveling while here in DC" but it still gives you a chance to see a different part of world through artistic traditions.
