Field Trip #4: Uptown Ethiopia

Little Ethiopia is the place to go in the Shaw neighborhood to get the best experience but since school is still in session I am mainly focusing on quick field trips that are close to Paul PCS. So that brings me to Uptown Ethiopia at the corner of 14th and Buchanan Streets.

This posting will incorporate two places which could work together for a great field trip. A study about Ethiopia would not be complete without looking at its religious legacy. Orthodox Christianity is a very important part of Ethiopian culture and history. One of the most celebrated tourist destinations are the rock hewn churches of Lalibela. These architectural feats are recorded on a mural on the side of the Ethiopian Health Center on 14th street.

This mural is adjacent to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Religion Church (1350 Buchanan Street NW, 202-726-4115 website) which would be the highlight of this trip. I stopped by but it was closed. I will have to contact them to determine what type of field trip we could have while visiting the church. Check out the website to get a better feel of what the church looks like and to find out the activities that are up and coming.

Across the street is the Ethiopia Resturant where I met Asnakech who was very welcoming and interested in getting students to come by. I could bring a whole class here for lunch (menu runs from 1-3), just stop by for students to sample Sambusas ($1.30 each sold from a box on the counter) and also look at injera bread that is sold in the market section of the restaurant. This would be a great stop either before or after a visit to the church or health clinic.
